A BIRTH OF A PATRIOT: HOW MUCH WE OWE HIM AS RAJANS

At the time of Don David Hewavitharne (Anagarika Dharmapala)’s birth 150 years ago, there were no Buddhist places of worship in Colombo. Devout Buddhists had to go to the Kelaniya Viharaya 10 miles north of the city on full-moon poya days for their religious observances; the only other viharaya was at Ratmalana, 7 miles south of Colombo, where the learned Buddhist monk Walane Nahimi (Nahimi=Chief Monk) lived.

The 'Gampola Perahera' Case, Riots and Martial Law

BY DR. WICKREMA WEERASOORIA
(Dr. Weerasuriya is the son of Mr. N. E. Weerasuriya Q.C. who was a teacher at Dharmaraja during the Bilimoria period, before he joined the Legal Profession. Dr. Wickreme too became a brilliant lawyer having obtained a First Class pass form the University of Ceylon Peradeniya in 1963.  )

the Gampola Perahera Case, which occurred nearly 100 years ago is of great historical significance. Firstly, the Riots and Martial Law of 1915 can be traced to this case. Fourthly, how the then Governor Sir Robert Chalmers had to be recalled prematurely and a new Governor (Sir John Anderson) appointed.
