He was 82 years old. D. Wijesinghe as he was later known, was a son of a farmer from Anuradhapura District. Dharmasena moved over to Dharmaraja College in 1954 to join the University Entrance class, during the time of Principal, S.A. Wjethilaka. Soon he became known for his oratory and he became the Leader of the College English and Sinhala Debating Teams. On entering the University Peradeniya, he became the President of the Jayatilaka Hall

In later years he became Secretary to Mr. S.Thondaman, the then Minister of Cottage Industries.

By this time he had made a name for himself as an upright Public Servant. He moved out of that position disagreeing with the Minister on a matter of principle. Later he became Secretary to the Minister of Plantations. On retirement, he was appointed Secretary to the Cabinet which post he held in the Governments of Chandrika Kumaratunga and of Mahinda Rajapaksa.
